IMPROVED VERSION OF K240 MONITOR AND A REAL THREAT TO SPEAKER SUPREMACY
First, although K240 phones old and new surround your ears, they are vented. Ambient noise is not reduced greatly as a result, but this design improves sound quality.I have used the 600 ohm K240M phones since 1986. The new K240S are 55 ohms making them far more compatible with todays lower voltage gear. Even better, this new design gives deep bass response that I never thought was possible from phones. Even a 32 foot bombarde pipe organ stop sounds quite real, although you will not feel the room shake. Listening to a signal generator through these new K240S phones gives an impression of powerful bass down to at least 40 Hz. The old K240M drops off below 100 Hz. A slight dip in the midrange(K240M) has been filled in, making the K240S more true sounding.Both the new and old versions reproduce operatic voices without increased "ping" which can be very abrasive. Spectacular
I've had a pair of 240's for the last 8 years. About 2 years ago, I ran over the cable with my office chair, and basically ruined the headphones. I mended the cable, but they never really sounded right again.So, I got a pair of Shure E40's, and they've been quite good. Yesterday, I finally realized that the jack on the AKG's was broken, not the wire. So, I replaced the jack, and for the first time in about two years, am using the headphones again.The sound quality is leagues better than anything else I've used in the last two years. Better than the Shures, better than the Sennheisers I got through work. There's a huge amount of detail that I'd been missing with the other headphones. I'm not an audio professional, or even a hardcore audiophile, but I've been a musician since I was young, and have a good ear.For the price, I haven't heard anything that even comes close to these headphones. Just watch the cord.

Great headphones, Extremely comfortable!!!
I must have gotten the deal of the century in April 08 as I picked these up for $79.95 from BSW through Amazon. Currently the best price on Amazon is $125. These headphones are still worth it at $125.I use these with a Ipod at work and wear them for 6+ hours a day. I've come close to depleting the battery only a couple of times (it's a 30 GB gen 5.5 Ipod). The bass and seperation sounds fantastic. You can crank these up to full volume without distortion (though I don't play them that loud to save my hearing). Most people in my department wear headphones and the most common comment when they put these on is "WOW".The long cord is good and bad. It sometimes gets in the way, but not that big of a deal.The comfort is something. They fit over the ears without pinching and as I stated above, they are worn for 6+ hours a day.These replace Sony MDR-D777LP headphones which I paid way too much for in a brick and mortar store. Great Headphone
got these as a gift from my friend. Im no audiophile but i can say these are the best headphones I have ever listened to. I own sennheiser 595s and a pair of bose qc2 for work. My only gripe is the comfort, i really don't enjoy the velvet "on-ear" feel of the headphones, and they cause my ears to hurt after about 3 hours. Other than that though i can say these are a very attractive looking great sounding set of headphones.

Great sound, but...
I just purchased these headphones after an old pair of HD 280 pro Senn's broke for good.I was excited to go for these akg's because they were well regarded, and appeared to be well built.When they arrived, I was disappointed with the cheap vinyl of the headband and the plastic parts. They haven't broken yet, but I have a bad feeling about them, and to be honest, when paying a little more for headphones, I don't want a molded vinyl headband.That said, they sound great, and after the closed hd 280's, these sound really clear and clean. They are also lightweight, which is good, and I suspect that's the reason the materials I take issue with were chosen...So overall, sound quality: 5 stars. Construction quality: 3 stars.I'll keep them and report back if they do come apart.

The Good, Clean Sound of AKG 142HDs
These cans are "semi-open", which is what I prefer with headphones. With "semi-open", the sound is more open and transparent than totally closed headphones yet the loss of bass is not as great as it it is with "full-open" headphones. It's a good compromise. The sound never creates a sense of listener fatigue even with long, multi-hour listening sessions.Some reviews have questioned whether these are fake AKGs. They are not. Like most audio companies, AKG has moved most of their production to China to be cost competitive. Given that fact, I would only buy these headphones if they are priced right. I got mine for under $100 and was happy with the construction and sound quality at that price point.It is important to note that this style of headphone does not go completely over the ears. This Must Be What Heaven Sounds Like
I am not what you would consider a professional musician by any means. However, I have spent my fair share of time in the studio and have a degree in electronic media. After 2 weeks with these, my memory cannot recollect having heard headphones this good in...well, ever.I was in the market for new headphones and when I heard that Quincy Jones was releasing a pair, I had to check em out. Then when I heard they were better than the Dre Beats, I definitely knew I had to get a pair. The only thing is that I was debating whether to purchase the Q460's or the 701's. Having purchased the 460's, I dont know if I will go forward with the 701's or not. These are that good. And as was mentioned in an earlier review, the sound quality seems to be getting better the more I listen to them. I went back and listened to some Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, and whatever else I could find from that timeframe. Man, I heard things I've never noticed in those recordings...

Q460's are great for portable devices. They are not too bass heavy like Dr. Dre Solos are. I listen to R&B,Jazz & a lil' Rap. 460's have a well balanced sound and,the lay-flat cups feel better around your neck. I also believe the Q's will be more durable. The plastic headband on the Solo's breaks WAY TO EASY! Stay away from the hype and get this better product. My only complaint is the length of the cords. The mic'd one is just over 3' and the other is useless unless you have something in your shirt pocket. AKG makes the best mic's so why not the best headphones?

Solid sound, poor cord
I've never listened to headphones much. As a young man, I always had a pair around for late night listening or when my neighbor might complain. Ten or twelve years ago, I acquired a pair of `phones as a gift from Sharper Image. I was travelling a lot in those days and had my first MP3 player, so those noise cancelling headphones came in handy. They weren't sonically great but they did work well keeping airplane noise out. At first I hesitated to give these 5 stars. There are headphones that sound better, including this one's older, more sophisticated (and open) brothers, the k601 and k701. But here's where this one wins:1) With a fairly high efficiency, it sounds great whatever you plug it into. This isn't so with most hi-end 'phones. Usually you need both a very high quality source and an equally expensive ($200+) dedicated headphone amp (not to mention a Digital-Analog-Converter if you use your laptop a lot).2) It isolates sound very well. I live in a great apartment, but unfortunately others think so too, and so they're building an enormous rig outside of my building. I come home, pop these on, and I'm in my own listening sanctuary.3) They have AKG's best-in-business mids. CLOSED VERSION OF AKG K 240 MK II STUDIO HEADPHONE
Sometimes the people next door make too much noise, thus making it hard to hear music through open back phones at a safe volume level. According to AKG parts lists, the 271 and 240 models use the same superb XXL drivers. The ear cushions are slightly larger on the 271. In addition the 271 has an automatic cut out switch that mutes the phones if you take them off. This feature is vital in studio use but is somewhat annoying for home use. Like the 240, two sets of ear cushions and two cords are included. Cords for the 240 and 271 are interchangeble.I used no equalizer or tone controls in this listening test.After a 20 hour break-in, sound is very similar to the 240 studio version, as would be expected. Balance is very natural, like live music, rather than punchy or unnaturally bright. Bass seems more tight and the lowest notes seem more defined than with the K 240 studio phones. Best headphones I've ever bought
The headphones are the most comfortable headphones I've ever bought. They are perfect to wear for long periods of time and don't irritate your ears like some previous ones I've had. The sound cut off switch works great in an office environment and nobody can hear a thing when I am listening to them. They don't get distorted at high volumes either. Great headphones.

Sound Quality:The clarity on the K99s are great. They produce an accurate tonal sound-scape that you can really bring out those "hidden" elements that you have missed before. For the price, the sound quality is exceptional. They don't sweeten the sound at all (artificially raising bass/mids/treble), so you are free to EQ your sound however you wish irrespective of the headphones.Comfort:I wear glasses, and one of the biggest concerns I had was the comfort of the headphones while wearing glasses. Many fellow four-eyes out there are familiar with the experience of having your frames pressed against your skull; the headphones griping your ears in a way in such a way that would make Darth Vader's choke seem tame.Well, let me say that these headphones are deceptively comfortable and light for their bulk. Monitoring headphones
I got these headphones for music production monitoring. I know that I should be using actual monitors but i didn't have the money at the time so i figured these are better then my laptop speakers. They sound great, you can really hear all of the different sounds clearly. They are built well and are light weight. Very comfortable for long periods of time. They could use a headphones amplifier to get better sounding low end but dont let that stop you from getting them. The semi-open back makes it sound alot more natural. Overall really great headphones for the money.

Excellent headphones for home use
I bought these headphones to replace an old set of low-end SONY's I'd had for years. I'm not bashing SONY, just those headphones. They had no bass to them and in order to hear bass in my iTunes music and youtube videos, I had to crank the volume which didn't do my ears a lot of good. These are the polar opposite. They sound excellent and fit very comfortably over your ears. They will eventually make your ears sore, but that will take 2.5 to 3 hours. These have a lot in common with the K77s. A relative of mine who works in a recording studio recommended these to me over some Sennheisers I had been considering. I'm glad I chose these. The only downsides to these are that they look a bit funny since the plastic "frame" sits high over your head, and they are a bit chunky so I'd avoid traveling with them. Excellent phones, though. I'm very pleased with them.

The AKG K3003s offer a stunning, balanced sound and a very sturdy, attractive design. They're easily among the best in-ear headphones we've heard but their horrendously high price tag means we can't recommend them. Not all headphones are created equal.
